פרק ג הלכה ד. אף על פי שתקיעת שופר בראש השנה גזירת הכתוב רמז יש בו לומר עורו עורו ישנים משנתכם והקיצו נרדמים מתרדמתכם וחפשו במעשיכם וחזרו בתשובה וזכרו בוראכם אלו השוכחים את האמת בהבלי הזמן ושוגים כל שנתם בהבל וריק אשר לא יועיל ולא יציל הביטו לנפשותיכם והיטיבו דרכיכם ומעלליכם ויעזוב כל אחד מכם דרכו הרעה ומחשבתו אשר לא טובה.
The Rambam throughout this passage speaks in the plural: uru uru yeshenim, hakitzu, chizru, zichru, hashochachim et ha'emet. And then all of a sudden at the end he shifts to the singular: ויעזוב כל אחד מכם דרכו הרעה ומחשבתו אשר לא טובה.
It's clear what the Rambam's makor is, where he drew the inspiration for this in Yeshayahu, the haftarah that we'll read be'ezrat hashem on Tzom Gedaliah. So דרשו ה' בהמצאו קראהו בהיותו קרוב, lashon rabbim as the navi says. יעזוב רשע דרכו ואיש און מחשבותיו, lashon yachid. And clearly the Rambam patterns the halacha here on those pesukim. But what's pshat then in the navi and therefore by extension in the Rambam? So the call to teshuva can be addressed to all of us collectively. It's a call that's relevant to everyone. דרשו ה' בהמצאו קראהו בהיותו קרוב is a wake-up call that's relevant to all of us and can be couched that way, it can be presented to the group as a whole. When it comes to actually doing teshuva, so teshuva has to be individualized. Has to be individualized on many levels. Has to be individualized that we all have our personal itemized list of what we have to do teshuva for and no two lists are identical. Even where lists overlap, even if one will compare the lists and see that many of us have certain shortcomings, certain averos in common, but it doesn't necessarily mean that the genesis of the cheit is the same. It doesn't necessarily mean that the way to strategize, to counter, to correct, to move beyond the cheit is going to be the same. All of that is intensely individual. So דרשו ה' בהמצאו ישעיהו speaks to all of us together, and then he speaks to each one of us individually: יעזוב רשע דרכו ואיש און מחשבותיו. And that's what the Rambam here tells us as well.
