The Chiyuv Mitzvah is so the Rambam continues in Halacha Bet
The way the Rambam formulates the middle part of the Tefillah the Bakashas Tzarchov is very interesting. The Rambam says Shoel again, the way the Frankel has it is Tzrachim, which makes the point even a little bit more subtle, but it's still there Lachora. Question is why didn't the Rambam just streamline it and say Why does he need the Just say a person Bakashas, Bakashas Tzarchov, that a person petitions Hakadosh Baruch Hu for his needs, for the needs that he needs. So why that formulation? So Lachora as follows. A person can be sort of intellectually aware and understand that he has certain needs but not really feel it. A person can feel so young and vibrant and healthy that okay, so if you tell him, do you think your health is guaranteed? He'll say no, no I realize, but he doesn't really feel it. Doesn't really feel it. Doesn't really feel that need. So the Rambam is saying it's not enough that a person sort of objectively agrees or concedes that these are human needs and therefore my needs as well, but it's Perhaps what that formulation suggests is that Tefillah a person has to have a sense of need and neediness, not just an intellectual awareness, but there has to be a feeling, a sense Hergish. It's a verb. It has to be a sense not just that he feels the needs, he feels the neediness, which then Lachora just brings to the forefront a question that anyway is important and is raised in context of Tefillah of if that's Taka the case that the Bakashas Tzarchov again there can't be this detachment, the person has to feel it, so how do Chazal tell us what to ask for? So Nicha if I'm formulating my own Tefillah, okay, so then I'll reflect what I feel, but how can even Chazal tell me what I'm feeling? Let's say you have a school, maybe it's an elementary school, maybe it's a high school, and the students are told that there's a big Gvir coming tomorrow, he's coming with his checkbook and the sky's the limit. You can ask for whatever you want. Okay, so he comes, the first kid comes in and he says, Nu, what would you like? The principal's sitting on the side just listening. And he says, I outgrew my baseball glove, I really need a new baseball glove. Shaye. So he writes out a check, he Googles how much a baseball glove costs and writes out a check for the top of the line baseball glove. And then the next kid comes in and says he wants the newest sneakers that are on the market. Shaye. So he writes the check. So then the principal calls a halt to the proceedings and calls all the kids into an assembly and says, you have to realize this is the opportunity of a lifetime. What are you squandering the opportunity by asking for crumbs? Ask him to pay for your college education. Ask him to endow college for you and for your children and for your grandchildren What are you asking for for crumbs? So the answer is that if the Shmoneh Esrei isn't descriptive, so then it's prescriptive. And Chazal are telling us that maybe Taka so I think that what I... leaders, I think I need a lot of money and I think I need to be famous and I think I need kavod, that's what I think I need. And Chazal are saying, no, that's not what you need. What you, first of all, what you need is, you need deia binah vehaskel, that's the first thing you need. And the second thing you need to do is you need to do teshuvah, and the third thing you need to do. So the if, if a person recognizes the prescription in, in the Shemonei Esrei, so then it becomes a description. And, and that's how the Shemonei Esrei, even when Chazal tell us what to ask for, will meet the standard of
