Tonight's horrific tragedy in Meron should and undoubtedly will in coming days trigger a cheshbon hanefesh, cheshbon hanefesh that should and presumably will happen both on a micro level as well as a macro level. But that's not what I wanted to comment on now. Putting aside the dvar Torah that was prepared for tonight, I just wanted literally, I think for two, three minutes, to reflect just on one thought. The Rambam writes in Perek Gimmel of Hilchos Teshuva that an indispensable element of being part of the tzibbur is being nichnas betzorasam. On the side of the Frankel Rambam they tell you to look in גמרא תענית יא. Moshe Rabbeinu models that behavior: וידי משה כבדים ויקחו אבן וישימו תחתיו וישב עליה. Moshe Rabbeinu foregoes the comforts of a kar u'keses. כל ישראל שרויין בצער אף אני אהיה עמהם בצער. B'emes, the Ribbono Shel Olam models that behavior kavyachol. Chazal tell us commenting on the pasuk of ותחת רגליו כמעשה לבנת הספיר that the Ribbono Shel Olam was nichnas b'tzoras Yisrael all the time that we were sheruyin b'tza'ar in Mitzrayim. The lashon is telling, revealing. The association with the tza'ar shouldn't only be mikofya, shouldn't only be some kind of tangential, superficial connection, but it's nichnas betzorasam. Nichnas betzorasam. A person enters rosho v'rubo into the tza'ar. The tza'ar here has more than one dimension, but certainly one dominant dimension is the tza'ar nafshi, the anguish. Again, not in any way to downplay or forget the physical tza'ar of those who are injured, for whom we obviously heartfully pray for a refuah shleimah b'karov. But without downplaying that, to focus for a moment on the tza'ar nafshi. And even though on one level and on one hand the tragedy of a death can't really be compounded, but on the other hand, when it's a misa meshuna, it is compounded. You know, mi k'amcha Yisrael, many Jews have developed a capacity to be nichnas betzara viscerally, instinctively. At a time like this, it's not a sha'as avoda, but based on prior avoda, it's a visceral reaction. For the rest of us, the way, one way to be nichnas betzara, when again speaking of the dimension of the mental images to help focus our thoughts, or mental images but to focus our thoughts, even if it's not a visceral reaction, through that hisbonenus, it will provide entry into the tzara. That itself has meaning, that existential bond, not just identification but bond. And then halevai that mitoch tzara it serves as an impetus, which it should, for teshuva. And in such a situation, the teshuva is on two levels, it's on an individual level. Every one of us betoras yachid in terms of his own areas which need correction, which need improvement. And then hopefully on a level of the klal as well. The chiyuv to be nichnas betzara is noheg when. occurs any day of the year. Now achos kama v'kama b'yemei hasfira, the tkufa שמתו תלמידי רבי עקיבא, where however one understands the Gemara in Yevamos, but clearly that, that feeling on their sublime level, that feeling of klal, of connectedness wasn't what it's supposed to be, the mechayev of lehikanes b'tzarasam is accentuated. May the Ribbono Shel Olam send a refuah sheleima to the cholim and may we never know of any such tzoros in the future.
